FAQ

Before your stay

Since CAS is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, we are obliged to adhere to regulations for travel costs set by the government. Due to this, CAS can only cover economy tickets. The trip must be conducted at the lowest price available, albeit so that the travel time is not unreasonably long.

The governmental regulation for travel also states that scheduled means of transport, i.e., aeroplane, train, boat, and bus, are the preferred methods of transportation. Use of non-scheduled means of transport, i.e., taxi, private/rental car, and pick-up services, must be justified and approved by CAS and the PI(s) in advance.

We encourage fellows to maintain a focus on the environment and sustainability when planning their travels.

All expenses must be documented with receipts.

CAS will of course reimburse fellows for their tickets to and from Oslo for their stay at CAS. We will also cover tickets for accompanying family members if these expenses is approved by the PI(s) in advance.

Scheduled means of transport, i.e., aeroplane, train, boat, and bus, are the preferred methods of transportation. Use of non-scheduled means of transport, i.e., taxi, private/rental car, and pick-up services, must be justified and approved by CAS and the PI(s) in advance.

When travelling to Oslo, CAS will cover expenses for, e.g., a bus ticket from the home to the airport, the ticket for the flight to Oslo, the train ticket from the airport to Oslo city centre, and the tram ticket to get to the flat.

If travel time exceeds 6 hours and meals are not included in the travel, expenses for subsistence may be refunded. This must be approved by CAS and the PI(s) in advance.

CAS cannot cover private travels or detours when travelling to and from Oslo.

If fellows want to do some additional travelling ahead of or after their stay at CAS, we may cover the expenses partially (e.g., equal to the costs of a direct flight to or from), but this must be agreed upon ahead of purchasing the ticket as it requires additional documentation.

No, CAS does not offer mileage allowance for fellows choosing to travel by car.

We may, however, cover documented expenses for fuel, tolls, ferry, and such, during the travel. Reimbursement of such expenses must be approved by CAS and the PI(s) in advance.

A parking space is not included in the accommodation and must be rented in addition. Cost for parking may be covered by CAS, but it must be approved by the PI(s) in advance.

For travel expenses, a reimbursement claim mustbe submitted within 1 month of the travel.

If the travel is bought on a return ticket, the deadline to submit is 1 month after the stay at CAS.

If arrival and departure are bought on individual one-way tickets, they can be submitted on the same reimbursement request within one month after the stay at CAS for shorter stays at the Centre. If the stay exceeds 3 month, separate claims for arrival and departure ticket may be submitted.

For other expenses, a reimbursement claim must be submitted within 1 month of purchase.

The absolute deadline for submitting reimbursement claims is one month after the end of the project, i.e., either 31 July or 31 January.

Visiting and residing requirements in Norway are determined by both citizenship and duration of stay. To find out about the specific requirements for a particular country of origin, please visit the website of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) >

On the UDI website, fellows should select ‘Want to apply’, enter the country of origin, and then choose ‘Work immigration’. Next, select ‘Vocational training and research’ and then ‘Researcher with own funds’. Fellows should find all the information they need regarding residence permits, requirements, rights, and obligations under this tab. Click on the green button labelled ‘How to apply’ for more information.

For family members, please visit the website of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) for information >

Family members may have to apply for their visas and permits separately.

CAS knows that some countries encourage long term visitors to come to Norway on a 90-day tourist visa, and to start the application process (as explained above) after arriving in Norway. Please note that fort the appointment to turn in your paperwork, fellows may be asked to provide an original copy of their birth certificate and a college or above diploma. Family members may be asked to bring copies and original copies of birth and marriage certificates. We encourage our fellows to check with the UDI which documentation they will need to provide before arriving in Oslo.

If you need any assistance in the process, please contact UDI. If that does not help, contact Kristin Løyning Reyes or Rune Flaten.

Fellows who have to apply for a visa do not need to report their move, as the UDI will inform the Norwegian Tax Administration during the visa application process.

Fellows and their family members staying in Norway without a visa for more than six months, must report their move to Norway within eight days of arrival.

Please visit the website of the Norwegian Tax Administration to learn about the requirements for a specific country of origin.

The Centre does not provide insurance or any healthcare benefits.

All researchers must have travel insurance covering their entire stay, including losses incurred during travel and damages to the provided accommodations.

If in doubt, consult your insurance company for details regarding your coverage.

Yes, or more precisely, the travel expenses are covered by the project. All travel expenses must be approved by the PI in advance, and the Centre does not partner with any travel agencies.

The researchers must make their own travel arrangements and book their own tickets, as they are best suited to make these decisions themselves.

The expenses will be refunded by the Centre when a reimbursement claim is submitted.

Please go to the reimbursement form for further details >

If, for financial reasons, you have difficulty paying for travel expenses, please contact office manager Maria Sætre for assistance from CAS.

The easiest way to get from Oslo Airport Gardermoen (Oslo lufthavn) to downtown Oslo is by train.

CAS will not cover expenses for taxi or the pick-up service offered by Frogner House Apaertments (FHA). Acceptions can be made for fellows who have special needs that make it difficult to travel by train. This must be approved by CAS and the PI in advance.

After passing through baggage claim and customs, follow the signs to the train station. You can choose between the more frequent (but more expensive) Airport Express (Flytoget), or the less frequent (and less expensive) Vy train (lines R10, R11, L12).

The stop closest to the pickup point for the keys to the flat is the National Theatre (Nationalteateret). All fellows should have received information from FHA regarding their accommodation and check-in about four weeks before to their arrival.

From the National Theatre, you can travel to the pickup point by tram by heading towards the exit marked ‘Nationalteateret’. By heading towards the opposite exit, marked ‘Henrik Ibsens gate’, you can walk about 10 minutes to the pickup point. If you choose the tram, take tram no. 13 towards Bekkestua or Lilleaker, and get off at the next stop, called 'Solli'.

The route from the pickup point to the flat will depend on the address of your building. Please refer to the email you have received regarding your accommodation for more information.
