"Writing in Latin and in the Vernacular" first workshop
Young CAS PI Stefan Drechsler hosted his first workshop at CAS last week. The event brought together scholars from various Norwegian and international institutions to present research on Latin and Norse manuscripts and fragments.

The workshop, part of Stefan's project Writing in Latin and in the Vernacular (WLV): Bilingual Scribal Practice in Norway ca. 1300–1350, examined multiple aspects of medieval manuscript culture. The final day featured discussions on production locations and provenance, paleography and text production techniques, as well as manuscript layout and codicology.
Stefan's project aims to bridge the gap in current research by examining manuscripts from a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective, embracing bilingualism, and involving expertise from medieval Latin and Old Norse philology. The project explores the scribal and social circumstances surrounding the conception, production, and use of these important historical documents in medieval Norway.
Stefan and his research team will build on the discussions and outcomes from last week’s workshop, with their next session planned for autumn in Bergen.
