The Kavli Week 2016: honoring nine scientific pioneers

The Kavli Prizes “recognize scientists for pioneering advances in our understanding of existence at its biggest, smallest, and most complex scales. Presented every two years in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience, each of three international prizes consists of $1 million (U.S.)”. 

The nine scientific pioneers of 2016

In Astrophysics, Kavli honors Ronald W.P. Drever, Kip S. Thorne and Rainer Weiss for the discovery of gravitational waves.

Gerd Binning, Christoph Gerber and Calvin Quate receive the Kavli Prize for their work for the invention and realization of atomic force microscopy within the field of Nanoscience.

Eve Marder, Michael M. Merzenich and Carla J. Shatz are honored in the field of Neuroscience for the discovery of mechanisms that allow experience and neural activity to remodel brain function.

The award ceremony is presided over by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon at Oslo Concert Hall September 6.
