Former project leader at CAS Jørn Øyrehagen Sunde Delivers Lecture at The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters
This month, Jørn Øyrehagen Sunde, professor at the Department of Public and International Law at the University of Oslo (UiO) and leader of the CAS project 'Social Governance Through Legislation' (co-led with Professor Erik Opsahl from NTNU in 2021/2022), delivered a lecture at The The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The event, titled 'Magnus Lagabøters Landslov 750 År', took place on 18 January, marking a significant moment in both Norwegian and European legal history.
Magnus Lagabøters Landslov, a landmark legal code, played a pivotal role in a legislative project that nearly failed, yet ultimately succeeded, profoundly shaping Norwegian society for over 400 years. King Magnus 6th Lagabøter, not originally destined to be king, became one of only four monarchs in medieval Europe to establish a nationwide legal code. His legislative work was so influential that in 1279, Pope Nicholas III granted a 100-day indulgence to anyone praying for the king, a privilege rarely bestowed upon other monarchs of that era. The identity of King Magnus and the nature of the 'Landslov' he created have been subjects of extensive research, especially leading up to the 750th anniversary of the 'Landslov' in 2024. This research has contributed significantly to our understanding of Norwegian politics, society, and law in the 1200s.
