CAS names inaugural Young CAS Fellows
The Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) is pleased to announce the first two researchers who have been selected for the Young CAS Fellow programme.
During the 2019/20 academic year, the fellows will on three occasions meet with international colleagues and collaborate on a research project of their choosing. The fellows will each receive a grant of up to NOK 175,000, as well as administrative support from CAS and the Young Academy of Norway.
For the 2019/20 academic year, the two Young CAS Fellows are:
Are Skeie Hermansen, postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo (UiO):
'I aim to bring together an international team of early-career social scientists in a collaborative effort to conduct the first ever cross-national comparative study of within-job pay inequalities between immigrant-origin and native workers (i.e., comparing pay gaps among employees who hold the same occupational title and work for the same employer).'
Hilde Nesse Tyssøy, team leader at the Birkeland Centre for Space Science at the University of Bergen (UiB):
'The motivation of the project is as follows: To create a network of researchers with complementary expertise to achieve a holistic view on the causes of energetic electron precipitation and its dependence on solar wind structures and magnetospheric processes to better estimate the occurrence, duration and strength of the energetic electron precipitation.'
Skeie Hermansen and Nesse Tyssøy were selected by the CAS Board of Directors out of dozens of applicants following a competitive selection process.
About Young CAS Fellow
The Young CAS Fellow programme is a research funding opportunity for postdoctoral students, junior academics, and other talented young researchers. The programme is open to researchers employed by CAS’ partner institutions in Norway.
Created in partnership with the Young Academy of Norway, the Young CAS Fellow programme gives researchers the opportunity to grow their professional networks and create a foundation for collaboration at a critical point during their careers. The programme extends CAS’ reach to researchers not eligible to apply to lead a CAS project at the Centre.
Central to the Young CAS Fellow concept are three gatherings that will take place over the course of the year. Each gathering can last up to five days.
The first gathering will be hosted between August 1-10, 2019, at CAS’ premises in the historic building of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The second may be hosted at the fellow’s home institution or a location and at a time of the fellow’s choosing. For the third and final gathering, in late spring 2020, the fellows will return to CAS.
