CAS fellows elected to lead the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Sciences

Three CAS fellows have been elected to lead the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Sciences (IAQMS) for the next three years.

The academy, which provides a forum for scholars in the field of quantum molecular science, is governed by an elected five-member bureau. At its annual meeting in Menton, France, this month, the academy elected no less than three CAS fellows to the bureau: Trygve Helgaker, professor of theoretical chemistry at the University of Oslo (UiO); Trond Saue, professor at Paul Sabatier University; and Hans-Joachim Werner, professor of theoretical chemistry at the University of Stuttgart.

Additionally, Odile Eisenstein, a professor and colleague of Helgaker's at the UiO Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences, was elected president of the academy.

Helgaker, Saue, and Werner are this year participating in the CAS project Molecules in Extreme Environments. Helgaker is leading the project.

The three scientists are all members of the academy, as are several of the other fellows participating in the CAS project, including Jürgen Gauss, Wim Klopper, and Peter Schwerdtfeger.

The academy is responsible for organising the triennial International Congress in Quantum Chemistry. It also hands out an annual award to a young academic who 'has distinguished himself by a pioneering and important contribution,' according to the academy's website.
