CAS Alumnus Nils Christian Stenseth awarded ERC Synergy Grant
Biology Professor Nils Christian Stenseth from the University of Oslo (UiO), in collaboration with researchers from the United Kingdom and France, has been awarded a grant of 10 million euros to further investigate the origins and spread of the plague. Professor Stenseth, who previously led the CAS project 'The Mystery of the Lemming Cycle' in 1996/1997, receives this funding from the European Research Council (ERC) through the ERC Synergy Grant.
The grant, amounting to over 118 million Norwegian kroner, will support Stenseth's research group in their endeavour to uncover more about how the plague outbreaks in this period occurred and to examine the roles of fleas and rats as vectors of the disease. Specifically, the project aims to reconstruct the environmental, biological, and social drivers that led to plague outbreaks in Eurasia between 1300 and 1900.
