Welcoming NordIAS Fellow Oscar Winberg
This month, we are pleased to welcome Oscar Winberg through the NordIAS Visiting Fellowship Programme. Winberg joins us from the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Turku.
The NordIAS Visiting Fellowship Programme was created to strengthen collaboration and academic dialogue across the eight Nordic Institutes for Advanced Study. Through short exchanges of one to three weeks, the programme gives fellows the opportunity to engage with new research environments and broaden their networks across the region.
Winberg will spend a week at CAS, working on his project “Breaking the News: Broadcasting, Congress, and the Transformation of Television News in the Late Network Era.” During his stay, he hopes to explore questions surrounding mass media, free speech, communication technology, and political control — themes that resonate strongly with this year’s CAS project Digital Constitutionalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.
‘My work on political control of broadcast journalism in the 1960s and 1970s can gain a great deal from conversations with scholars approaching similar issues from different angles,’ he explains in his proposal. He looks forward not only to taking part in workshops, seminars, and paper presentations, but also to the everyday exchanges that happen over lunches and coffee breaks.
